I read it twice.
Then I held it out to Laurent without a word.
He read it, and his jaw went tight under the beard.
"Who signed?"
"Four stewards." I looked at the clerk. "When did the stewards ever meet in December?"
The clerk looked at his horse's ears.
"Mademoiselle Odile's carriage was at the hotel this morning," he said. "That's all I know, mademoiselle. I'm sorry."
He turned the gray and trotted off before I could say anything else.
Aurore picked up the little bag of coins and weighed it in her hand.
"Well, at least we got the hundred back."
"I don't want the hundred back." My voice came out shaking. "I want the race."
Laurent was still looking at the paper.
"It says no woman may ride," he said slowly. "It doesn't say who's the owner."
"You're the owner."
"I am. That's the trouble." He folded the paper. "Four men can tell the spare no. He hasn't got a house or a vote or a dollar to his name. They told me no with one line and didn't even send it to me."
