Chapter 7: Fifteen Thousand Dollars
On Wednesday morning my card worked again, and I paid for four nights at the Alder in full.
Nate processed it and said nothing about the rate.
I took it as a victory.
I was in the café at ten with Charlie asleep in the carrier and a cup of real coffee, my first in six weeks, when a pair of expensive shoes stopped beside my table.
Carter's mother looked down at me.
She was sixty, trim and pearl-eared, in a cream coat with a gold pin on the lapel.
"May I sit?"
"No."
She sat anyway.
"I'm not going to shout at you in a restaurant, Libby. That isn't how I was raised."
"Good."
She opened her handbag and took out a long white envelope.
She laid it on the tablecloth between the sugar and my cup.
"Fifteen thousand dollars," she said. "A cashier's check. It's yours, no conditions."
"No conditions."
"One small one." She smiled at me. "Come home. Let Carter fix this. He's very sorry. Everyone says things in a bad week."
"Your son told me to learn to handle a baby alone while he was kissing his lawyer."
"Keep your voice down."
"I thought you weren't going to shout at me."
A couple at the next table turned their heads.
"I know you're hurt," she said, lowering her own voice. "I would be. But think about the child. He needs two parents in one house. A hotel isn't a home."
"It has been a better home than mine this week."
"Libby."
"Put the check away."
"It's a great deal of money for a woman with no job."
