Chapter 16: Packing House
The loudspeaker over the packing floor crackled at ten o'clock on Monday morning, and every machine on the line shut off at once.
Cooper stood at the foot of the stairs with Jonas beside him and a woman from Emory on his other side, holding a clipboard.
She was the transplant program's independent donor advocate, small and gray and polite, and she had arrived at eight with a briefcase.
She had not said a word since.
"Good morning, everyone," Lester said, over the speaker.
He stood on the second-floor landing above the line, in a clean white shirt, with a microphone and a smile.
Two hundred workers stood among the idle shellers with their hairnets and gloves, looking up.
"I've called you together because I owe you honesty," Lester said. "Your CEO has been using company time and company money to purchase a kidney."
A murmur ran through the room.
"That's illegal," Lester went on, gently. "It's also a gross abuse of this family's trust. I've filed the proper complaints, and I'm sorry you have to hear it this way. I'd like the staff to understand that I will be taking over the company, and that this behavior will stop."
