Chapter 19: The Ford
We were on the moor road in the time it took the stable boys to bring the horses.
Ketil rode ahead on a black stallion with no saddle blanket and no coat.
I rode a grey mare that Hetta had thrown at me from the stable door.
My mother's iron lid was strapped to my back and my smock was hitched up to my knees.
The Beta's riders were a mile behind.
Ketil did not look at me.
His jaw was set so hard it shook.
"Ivar has the hours of every patrol on this moor," he said, without turning his head.
"He will have a way across the river that I don't know about."
"He'll have a boat or a ford."
"The Fallow Ford," I said.
He glanced back.
"The envoy let it slip at the supper," I said.
"The green coat.
"I've been waiting to use it."
Something that was almost a smile crossed his mouth, and went.
We rode.
The river came into sight an hour before noon, wide and brown and fast with autumn rain.
