Chapter 12: The Table

The Starlite after closing was a different room.

The chairs were up on the tables, the stage curtain was drawn, and one row of work lights burned over the bar.

A long table had been set in the middle of the dance floor, with a white cloth and a water jug and nine chairs.

Augie sat at one end.

The gentleman from Philadelphia sat at the other, with a notebook, a pen and no expression.

Along the wall to my left stood the dancers, all seven of them, in street clothes and bare faces.

I knew every one of them, and none of them looked at me.

Declan sat at the table's middle, on the side facing the dark windows, with his hands flat on the cloth and his eyes on the water jug.

He had not looked at me since the car.

I sat down in the chair at the table's foot.

Nobody had told me where to sit.

It was the only empty chair.

"We'll begin," the gentleman said. "Mr. Farina has made a complaint, and I've read it. I'll have it read aloud, so every person in the room knows what's being said."

He nodded to Augie.

Augie stood.

He had a typed page, and he did not look at it.

"It's simple," Augie said. "For four years, maybe more, girls at this club have been pressed by the boss. I've seen it. The door crew has seen it. When a girl won't be quiet, Declan makes her quiet. I've kept the log. Dates, rooms, names. I never wanted to bring it, but a man has to protect the house."
