Chapter 12: Wet Grass
The ring emptied slowly.
People came up to me one at a time to touch my hand or bow their heads or say nothing at all.
I stood in Peigi's coat and let them, and could not stop shaking.
When the last torch had gone down the road I walked away from the stones, between the beeches, to the oldest of the three cairns.
I put my back against it.
The rocks were cold and wet.
I could smell everything.
I could smell the moss and the iron in the stones and the cold ash of the torches.
Coming up behind me through the dark, I could smell the man.
"Ishbel."
I did not turn.
"Don't say anything," I said. "Not yet."
He stopped a yard away.
I felt the heat and the size of him through the dark.
He kept very still, because he was afraid any move would send me running.
"Your hands," I said. "Show me."
He held them out.
They were shaking.
I took them in mine and looked at the knuckles, torn from the stone where he had fallen on his knees.
"I knelt to you," Coll said, hoarse. "I fell before three hundred people, and I thought it was the worst thing that would ever happen to me."
"And?" I said.
"It was the only time I've been glad," he said.
"You hated me."
"I hated something I couldn't see," he said.
"You had me scrubbing your floors for a fortnight."
"Aye," he said.
"And you let me do all that to you," I said.
"Aye," he said.
"Why?"
"Because I'd no choice," he said, "and I wanted none."
