Chapter 9: Midnight at the Table

At midnight the long kitchen was dark except for the red eye of the range.

I stood at the head of the table in my nightgown with my arms crossed.

I heard him come down the back stair in his bare feet.

He did not turn on the light.

He stopped a yard from me, in his shirtsleeves, and I could see the shape of him against the window.

"I told you what I would do," Coll said.

"You did," I said.

"Have you thought about it?" he asked.

"All night."

"Tell me which part."

I kept my voice flat, though my heart was knocking.

"The part where you take my nightgown off with your teeth," I said.

I heard him exhale.

"On your knees, then," I said. "Since you're so sure."

He went down on the flagstones in front of me without a word.

I had learned to read the way he moved by now.

I saw the effort in it, and the want underneath, and the pleasure he took in being told.

I lifted the hem of the nightgown to my thighs and held it there.

"Go on," I said.

He took the cotton in his teeth.

He drew it slowly up my legs and over my hips.

I felt the cold air on my skin and the heat of his mouth beside it, brushing the inside of my thigh as he passed.

I lifted my arms.

He pulled the gown over my head with his teeth and his hands together, and dropped it on the floor.

Then he knelt there looking up at me, with his eyes black, and he did not move his hands.

"Good," I said, and his whole body answered.

"Up. On the table," I said. "I want you looking at me when you do it."
