Chapter 23: The Ring

The fair was nearly empty by ten on Saturday night.

Half the stalls had pulled down their shutters, and a boy was sweeping up spilled popcorn under the strings of colored bulbs.

The carousel was still turning.

An old man in a bright vest leaned on the ticket booth, counting the last of the rides.

Cullen sat on the green bench at the edge of the platform with his elbows on his knees.

He wore the plain white shirt again.

He didn't hear me come up behind him.

"You came," he said, when I stood in front of him.

"I came."

"I didn't want to look."

"You were looking at the horses."

"I was looking at where you'd walk from."

I sat down next to him.

The organ wheezed out its tune, and the little brass horses rose and fell.

"I told you a year," I said.

"You did."

"I'm a liar."

He turned his head.

"It's been eleven days," I said.

"I've eaten at that table every night."

"I've watched my brothers fight about who gets the last potato."

"I went to Alister on Tuesday and he's paying for the class."

"I told him I'd pay him back, and he laughed in my face."

"I'm glad."

"I don't want to wait a year. I'm tired of being right about how long I can stand it."

He didn't move.

"The ring," I said. "You said you'd keep it in your pocket till I asked."

"I have."

"I'm asking."
