Chapter 13: The Party
The Club had valet parking and a doorman in a green coat.
I parked my own car on the street, two blocks down, and walked.
Ronnie had agreed on the phone that afternoon.
"Go. Show her mother."
His lawyer had cut the clip for me herself. Ten seconds, from the door opening to the door swinging shut.
She'd emailed it with a letter attached, signed by Ronnie, saying I had his permission as Kelly's husband.
I had the letter folded in my purse.
I had the clip on my phone.
I'd worn the only black dress I owned, the one from Dad's funeral.
The doorman checked his list.
"Name?"
"Harwood."
He smiled. "Of course, Dr. Harwood. Go right in."
It was the first time the name had worked for me in three months.
The ballroom was white and gold, with a string quartet in the corner.
There were two hundred people in it, at least.
Attendings I'd trained under, nurses' managers, the anesthesia department in a loud knot by the bar.
Tim stood at the edge of that knot in a gray suit.
