Chapter 19: Stepping-Stone

The hallway went quiet around us.

Every camera was pointed at Mia, and then, one by one, they swung to me.

The night nurse's hand was on my elbow.

"You don't have to answer that, honey," she said.

"I know."

I answered it anyway.

I'd only do it once, and I wanted to do it here, where the cameras were.

I walked down the hall until Mia and I were three feet apart.

Her lawyer tried to step between us. Mia put a hand on his arm and he stopped.

She was waiting for me to cry, I think. Or to hug her. One of the two always happened.

"When you came to live with us," I said, "you were four and I was seven. Mom said you needed the bedroom with the window seat. I gave it to you. I carried my own books down the hall."

Mia's chin trembled.

"I gave you my ribbons and my firsts, and I gave you the day of my residency interview, because Mom needed me at your party."

"Sarah."
