Haley moved into our guest room on Friday with one gray duffel bag and nothing else.

She unpacked in six minutes.

I know because I stood at the end of the hall, pretending to look for my slippers, and watched her put four sets of navy scrubs into the dresser and a toothbrush into the bathroom cup.

She did not hang a single picture.

"Thank you for having me," she said. "I'll stay out of your way, Mrs. Wexler."

"It's no trouble," I said.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was a text from Hattie, who had spent her lunch break calling funeral homes.

No Merritt service this week. Not at Gaylord's, not at the one on Forest Drive.

The lady at Gaylord's says nobody in that family has died since the Nixon administration.

Your nurse is a liar, Lexi-Lexi.

I put the phone away and smiled at Haley.

"Ten o'clock Saturday, was it?"

"Yes," Haley said. "I'll be back by noon."

She left at nine-thirty the next morning in a plain black dress, carrying a small bag, and she came back at noon with dry eyes and no flowers.

She did not say where she had been.

I did not ask.

That first night, I lay in bed with the earbud in and the nursery on my phone and the guest room one wall away.
