Chapter 19: The Lashing
The practice ring was held two mornings after the barley, in the round stone hall at the foot of the tower.
Forty-one villagers stood on the rope.
The rope had a knot for each house, and each villager stood beside their own.
Twenty knots hung between them with nobody behind them, and the gaps were easy to count.
The Bellkeeper stood at the side with both palms against the wall.
He could not hear the Bell, but he could feel it through the stone.
He had written on his slate that no one living felt it better.
His job was to tap the count on the wall.
A soldier beside him would pass the tap along by flicking a lantern shutter, and every hand on the rope would pull on the flick.
It had seemed a sound plan in the cart shed.
Naho climbed the tower first, with Alric behind her and the stump of Dawnbrand in his belt.
He had put the miller's grandmother's ladle in his belt too, and had not said why.
The belfry was an open room of stone arches.
The Wake Bell hung in it, tall as a man and the grey of an old pot.
