Chapter 20: Brant's Last Mark
Brant took the tower key from the Bellkeeper's shelf while the Bellkeeper was explaining soup to a bowl.
He took it at midnight, with a lantern covered by his hat.
Naho knew it was done because Alric woke her by standing very still over her bedroll until she opened her eyes.
"The Captain has the key," he said. "He has six soldiers, a ladder, and a very large piece of chalk."
They went out into the lane with the ferryman's rope between them and Gerta limping behind with her braid undone.
Nobody spoke, because the lane drank it, and the silence was so complete that Naho felt her glasses slip.
At the tower door they found Brant writing.
He had chosen the biggest stone of the doorway and stood on a barrel to reach it.
His chalk was a new piece as thick as a thumb, and each letter he made was taller than the last.
He mouthed the words as he wrote them.
THIS BELL WAS RUNG BY CAPTAIN BRANT MALLOW OF THE ROYAL ESCORT.
