Chapter 21: The Door of the Tower
Brant sat in the tower doorway until dawn with his back against the jamb and the key in his fist.
He had put his mustache back on its points and found a clean piece of chalk, and he was not going to move.
The lane was grey from the mill to the tower.
Naho stood in the stone passage inside the door, where sound lived, and Brant looked up at her from the step.
"The tower is sealed by order of the Captain," he said. "The Bell belongs to the Crown."
"It belongs to the Weir," said Naho. "Sixty-one houses. It's in the book."
"The book is in a script I do not care for," said Brant.
"Open the door, please."
"It is open," said Brant, and she saw that it was.
He was sitting in it.
She had no answer to a captain sitting in a door, and the sun was due within the hour.
The Wake Bell was rung at dawn, and a bell that missed the dawn missed the day.
She moved to the stone arch's inner edge with the book under her arm, where words could still reach Brant.
