Chapter 14: The Terms

I got my arm under his shoulders and lifted him off the tile.

He weighed nothing.

"Don't call anybody," Tullio rasped.

"You're bleeding."

"I've bled before. Put me in the chair."

I set him in the carver at the head of the table, with a dish towel at his mouth and the cardigan twisted on his thin chest.

He breathed through it for a full minute.

When he could speak, his voice was a thread.

"Where is my daughter?"

"Out looking for me."

"Good. Then you have ten minutes. Sit."

I sat.

"Tell me why you came through that door like a fire."

I told him about the waiter, the glass at the toast, and the envelope of Corrado's cash meant for my coat.

I did not say where I had heard it.

He nodded slowly.

"Your wife," he said.

"She isn't."

"She will be on paper until a judge says otherwise." He coughed and wiped his lip. "Did she weep?"

"Yes."

"Did you believe it?"

"I believed she was afraid," I said. "That isn't the same."

"No. It isn't." The old man looked at the towel. "Now I will tell you what I told no one, not even my daughter."

The refrigerator hummed in the dark.

"In March the doctor gave me eight months. That is what I told her. It was a lie."

"How long?"

"He said six weeks to three months. He said it was in the bone."
