Chapter 21: Lorna's Offer
I opened the door because my mother was behind me, and she would have opened it herself.
Lorna stepped into my apartment.
She looked at the radiator, the couch with the dent in the cushion, and the casserole dish on the table.
She looked at Gregory, who had gone silent beside the sink with a dish towel in his hand.
"Gregory," she said. "I see you've found a housekeeper."
"Lorna," my mother said, pleasantly. "I'm the mother."
"I'm so sorry. Of course you are."
"Sit down, if you like. We were just having dessert."
"I won't be long."
Lorna did not sit.
She set the cream envelope on my table, between the soda bread and the salt, and squared it with her gloved fingers.
"Here is what I have come to say."
"Thursday morning, you will stand in front of a judge and tell her the garage was a misunderstanding."
"You will withdraw the complaint about the letter, which a good lawyer can say was a clerical error."
