The courtroom on Thursday had wooden benches, a flag, and a judge who read everything twice.
I sat at the front table in my navy dress, with my lawyer on one side and a yellow pad on the other.
Behind me the benches were full.
My mother sat in her church coat with Ivy, who had swapped three shifts to be there.
Cassia sat beside them with her bruise covered by a scarf.
Gregory sat at the end of the row.
Two seats behind him sat Colin's father, in a gray suit, alone.
Lorna's seat was empty.
Colin came in last, in a navy suit and the loud watch.
His new lawyer looked like a man who had been told the case was simple and then handed the file.
He didn't look at me.
The judge arrived and sat and began.
She worked through the petition, and I answered when she asked me, in a voice that stayed even.
"Ms. Quinlan, the respondent says you gave him one hundred eighty thousand dollars as a gift."
"I loaned it to him, Your Honor."
"Do you have proof?"
"A napkin."
A cough in the benches.
"With his signature and the word 'loan' above it," I said.
