"Then I'll never answer," I said.
I walked down the steps past him, with the cameras flashing and my mother's arm in mine.
Colin stayed where he was, with his mouth a little open.
In eight years, it was the first time I hadn't stayed to hear the end of his threat.
Gregory met us at the bottom of the steps and took my other hand.
He didn't say congratulations.
He only held on.
That night the penthouse smelled like garlic and brown butter, and the harbor lights were shining across the black windows.
Ivy and Cassia had taken my mother out for ice cream and a very loud celebration in Dorchester.
Gregory had cooked.
He put a plate of pasta in front of me on the kitchen island, and a glass of wine, and sat opposite me.
"You won," he said.
"We won."
"You won. I handed over a folder."
"You sat in a courtroom while your brother apologized to me," I said. "In front of a judge."
"He did it well."
"He did it better than you did."
"I'm a very slow learner."
I was laughing when the intercom buzzed.
It buzzed again, long and hard, and then somebody started pounding on the front door of the penthouse.
Gregory stood.
