Chapter 4: I Am Not Breaking My Promise

Rocco dragged me through the house to the library, where the three elders were already waiting.

They had beaten us there by the back stairs.

The oldest elder stood at the fireplace with both hands on his wolf's-head cane.

"The Brandolini family broke the agreement," he said. "A daughter was named, and a different daughter arrived."

"Both of them are Brandolini daughters," I said.

"Silence, girl."

"Send her home tonight," the second elder told Rocco. "Call Miami. Tell the father to put the right daughter on a plane."

"She cries," the third elder said, "but she knows how to behave."

I looked at Rocco.

He was standing by the window with his arms folded and his shirt still wet at the collar.

"Livia knows how to behave," I said, "and she'll be buried before she's thirty."

All three elders stared at me.

The words had come out before I could stop them.

I had not meant to say that to anyone, but I did not take it back.

Rocco's head turned slowly.

His grey eyes were fixed on my face.

For a long moment nobody in the library spoke.

"Rocco," the oldest elder said. "She leaves tonight. That is the family's decision."

Rocco did not say anything.

Then he took his hand from his pocket, and I thought he was about to give the order.

"Come upstairs, Camilla."

"What?"

"Come upstairs."

He walked out of the library, and I followed him because my wrist was still in his hand.

The elders shouted behind us.

On the third floor he stopped in front of my door and pushed it open.

"Change out of that dress."

"Excuse me?"

"You'll catch a cold."
