Chapter 15: Lacey's Phone
Hester got to the kitchen before any of us did.
She came down the back stairs in a flannel robe with her braid over one shoulder and her cane in her fist.
She looked at Lacey's face, and then at my ruined hair, and then at her grandson's torn shirt.
She said nothing about any of it.
"Sit," she said to Lacey. "I'll make tea."
"Mrs. Middleton, I don't"
"You may cry in my kitchen," Hester said, setting the kettle on. "You may not lie in it."
Lacey sat.
She put her phone on the table and kept both hands flat on top of it.
Up close she looked much younger than twenty-five.
The pearls were gone from her neck, and her thin voice cracked on the first word.
"Dale dumped me," she said. "In the car outside his mother's house, forty minutes ago."
"He said Mama's finished and he's not going down with us."
