Chapter 17: The Retreat
I ran back across the yard barefoot and banged the pool house door open.
"He took my mom."
Four men came off that bed at once.
Torin had his glasses on before his feet hit the floor.
He pulled the card out of the driveway camera with his thumbnail and put it in his laptop.
4:12 a.m.
Dwight's car in the driveway with the headlights off.
My mother came out the front door in her robe and slippers, carrying an overnight bag.
She walked on her own.
He held the car door for her, and kissed her temple before he closed it.
"She went with him," Kipp said quietly.
"She went because he's her husband," I said. "That's what he's counting on."
Gage was already pulling on his boots.
"Sedona's two hours," he said.
"Zane drives," I said. "Nobody gets a ticket."
We took Zane's truck and Kipp's Jeep.
My mother had wanted to take me to Sedona for my sixteenth birthday.
My dad had said he'd drive.
We never went.
The retreat sat at the end of a long gravel road behind a wooden gate.
A sign said Rest. Restore. Return.
