Chapter 15: The Chair
The board met in open session on Wednesday at nine, in the long oak hall above the Commons.
Anyone enrolled could come, and by five to nine the benches were full.
I sat in the third row between Grayson and Lane, with Sean's photo folded in my blazer pocket.
We had agreed to keep it there.
A Liaison stamps slips, Lane had said, and Delaney would call the date a typo.
We needed one more thing before it counted.
Eight people in dark suits sat behind a long table at the front.
The chair sat in the middle, with the silver cane hooked on the table edge.
Delaney's father sat at the far end, and Delaney sat behind him in her pearls, writing nothing.
Rhys stood alone at a small table facing them, in a clean shirt and no tie.
The chair read the agenda in a pleasant voice.
"Item three. The standing of Rhys Montgomery, a student, under the Montgomery family trust."
