Chapter 17: Delaney's Last Card
"Put the tin down," I said.
"I'm admiring it." Delaney turned my half of the penny over in the light. "It's so humble. I never knew a person could be this proud of a coin."
"Put it down, or I'll take it from you."
She laughed, sweet and silvery, and set the penny back on the recipe cards one finger at a time.
Then she reached into her coat and laid a cream envelope on the quilt between us.
"Open it."
I didn't.
"Fine. I'll tell you what's in it. A full place at a college in Boston, paid by my father's foundation. Room, board, books, and a stipend."
"My father has already spoken to their dean."
"You'd start in January, and you'd keep your name clean. The slip with my signature goes in the shredder."
"And what do I do?"
"You withdraw the bet. Tonight, in writing, one line. And you stop coming to Maple's steps to make speeches."
