Chapter 23: Sean's Goodbye
We walked down to the school dock, where the planks were new and the water was calm.
I had changed into dry jeans and the sweater he had washed for me.
Sean sat at the end with his boots over the water, and I sat beside him.
For a while neither of us spoke.
A kayak moved far out on the lake, and its paddle flashed.
"I went to the dean this morning," he said.
"For what?"
"The Heron Medal." He kept his eyes on the water. "Freshman year the school gave me a medal for courage."
"I wrote an essay about a rescue at a lake. I told it the way you've heard it."
I turned and stared at him.
"I gave it back," he said. "The medal, the certificate, and the essay. I told her it was Rhys's, and she'll correct the record."
"Sean, that was in your file. It's on your applications."
"It's on my applications because I lied on them. I'd rather be a boy with nothing on a form than the one with a medal he stole."
