Chapter 23: The New Room

The door to the front room was open.

The big bed stood where their father's had stood, a wide plain frame of ash wood that the brothers had cut and joined themselves.

And the quilt on it was mine.

The brass bed from my old room had been carried in too and leaned against the wall, because they knew I would want it near.

Snow ticked on the window.

The key was still in my fist, its green ribbon wound round my wrist.

I stood in the middle of the floor in my good dress, the black one with the buttons.

And my hair half down, and my glasses on crooked from crying, and the two of them shut the door behind us.

"Welcome home," Rhett said.

"Lowen," Declan said.

I held up a hand.

"Wait," I said. "Tonight, I'm not the teacher."

They both went still.

"Tonight I want the two of you to take what you want. You've learned it. I've watched you learn it. Take it."

"Lowen," Rhett said hoarsely. "You mean that."

"Show me what you've got."

Declan looked at his brother.

Something passed between them, an old language, but this time it wasn't a cellar.

It was a decision.

Declan crossed to me first.

He took the key out of my fist, set it on the dresser.

And began unbuttoning the dress, one small button at a time, from the collar down.

His fingers were sure.

He kissed each inch of skin as it came free, my collarbone, the swallow, the valley between my breasts, my belly.

And when the dress dropped to my feet he knelt and kissed the soft place under my navel.

"Brother," he said without turning. "The glasses."

Rhett took them off me with great gentleness, folded the earpieces, and set them on the dresser beside the key.

Then he stepped up behind me and lifted me clean off the floor.

I shrieked.

"You are not allowed to carry me," I said.

"We're not in class."

He put me down on the ash bed in the middle of the quilt.

They undressed in front of me.

There was no hurry in it now, no fumbling, no audience, no lesson.

Declan's shirt came off, and Rhett's flannel, and their boots, and their belts.

And the two of them stood at the foot of the bed in the lamplight.

Lean and broad, pale and brown with winter, hard already, looking at me.

"I want to hear you say what you want," I said.

"You first," Declan said.

"I said I'm not the teacher."

"Then I'll go." He drew a breath. "I want you on your back."

"I want to be inside you. And I want to see my brother touch you while I do."

"That's a good start."

"Rhett?"

"I want to feel you come on my mouth, first," said Rhett, rough.

"And then I want to be in your ass again, if you'll have me. But slow. And I want Dec to be where I was."

Declan went very still.

"Where you were?"

"You take the back this time," Rhett said. "I'll take the front. I'd like to see your face, Dec."

"I'd like to see what it's like for you. I think I'll like it."

Declan stared at him.

He swallowed.

"That," he said, "is the most generous thing anyone has ever offered me."

"It's selfish. I want to watch."
