Chapter 16: Marsha's Safe
Marsha met me at the freight dock behind Thayne Tower at ten that night.
She wore her camel coat over a cardigan and carried a flashlight she didn't need.
"He's been in his office since the courthouse," she said. "He sent his car away. He hasn't eaten."
"Does he know I'm coming?"
"He knows nobody's coming. That's why it's safe."
She took me up in the service elevator, past dark floors full of covered desks.
Colton sat behind his desk on the forty-first floor with the city lights behind him and no lamp on.
He looked up when I came in, and his face closed.
"Marsha," he said.
"Don't you Marsha me," she said. "Hear her out."
I walked across the carpet and laid the carbon copy on his desk.
I didn't say hello.
"You never stood in that chapel," I said. "Somebody swore you did."
