Chapter 15: The Guest Book
The volunteer's daughter opened her front door in Delaware before Gordy had finished climbing the porch steps.
"Dad saw you on the news," she said. "He hasn't sat down since."
She was fifty, in a fleece vest, and she looked at Gordy's knee and then at my chain.
"He's in the den," she said. "Mind the dog."
Pickles the beagle was lying across the hall, and he lifted his head and decided I was acceptable.
The old man stood in the middle of a den full of boxes with a leather book held against his chest.
"I told you a week," he said. "I'm sorry it took eleven days and a television."
"You kept it."
"I keep everything. My wife used to say I'd keep the Pope's handkerchief if he dropped it."
He held the book out to me with both hands.
