By seven o'clock the story was on every phone in Baltimore.
Gordy read me the headline over the speaker while I drove away from the creek.
"'Chairman's Secret Wife Is His Own Hired Investigator.'"
"Who gave them that?"
"A source close to the Thayne board," he said. "Kid, they have your high school yearbook picture."
"Which one?"
"The one with the bangs."
I almost laughed, and then I read the second line on my dashboard screen.
It called me a fraud who had trapped a grieving billionaire for money.
It said I had "posed as an investigator to hide a seven-year-old scheme."
It didn't say a word about the fund, the actress, or the man who had filed the license.
There were eleven reporters on my front step when I turned onto my street.
I drove past them, parked two blocks away and walked in through the alley behind the Greek bakery.
Gordy was waiting in my kitchen with a bag of crullers and the television on.
