Chapter 16: Monday Night Desk
"You took the call," I said.
It was all I had, so I said it quietly.
I said it in front of his mother, the blue china and the woman at the foot of the table.
"Hold on to that until Wednesday," I told him. "The board meets at nine."
His mother did not stop me when I left.
She stood at the head of the table with one hand on her chair.
She looked at her son.
On Wednesday the boardroom of Kellerman Freight was full.
The board chair had asked for every director, and eleven of them sat down both sides of the oatmeal carpet.
Lena came in last, in white, with a lawyer I hadn't seen before.
He was a silver-haired man in a gray suit, and he laid his phone face down very carefully.
Tom took a chair at the middle of the long side, nowhere near the head.
I took the head of the table again, with Bernadine on my right.
On my left sat a woman I had flown in on her day off.
The woman was in her fifties, in a navy cardigan, with reading glasses on a chain.
A clear plastic sleeve lay in her lap.
She was the desk nurse from Pell County Memorial.
