Chapter 17: The Stone Will Not Lift
Wynne went to the Stone Hall alone, because the note said alone.
She told Hester and Bram where, and told them to follow a quarter of an hour behind.
Garrick was sitting on the steps of the Stone with his bad arm in a sling.
He stood when he saw her.
His face had lost its grey and gone yellow, and there was no light in it at all.
"You came," he said.
"What do you want?"
"Come back." He said it fast, in one breath. "Take the mark again. We'll remake the bond tonight, and I'll drop the charge. Calla can go. I'll send her out."
"You called her Luna-elect yesterday."
"I was angry."
"You were angry at me for your own blindness, Garrick."
"Wynne."
"No."
He swallowed.
"Then I'll say it in front of the Alphas," he said. "That you took what was mine."
"Say it."
She walked past him, up the steps, and stood at the Stone with her back to him.
By noon the hall was full.
Ashfall's pack filled the left benches.
Saltmarsh's twelve wolves stood along the right wall, with their arms folded.
The Alpha of the western pack sat at the high table in the middle, a lean, sour old man in a brown coat.
He had Garrick on his left, and Bram's chair on his right.
Bram did not sit in it.
He stood at the wall by the witnesses, with his bruise yellow on his jaw.
Calla sat behind Garrick in a white dress, with a silver chain at her throat.
She did not look at Wynne.
"Alpha Stonehall," said the western Alpha. "You've called us here. State the charge."
Garrick got to his feet.
"My former Luna drew on the strength of this pack through her blood and bond, for eight years, and took it with her when she cut the mark," he said. "My fighting strength is gone. My wolf is silent. She did it on purpose, to ruin me."
