Chapter 11: Twice
Shyla's POV
My mother's wedding-ring quilt lay on Jubal's living-room floor in front of the gas heater, and I was on my knees in the middle of it.
The rings were blue and cream and faded rose, and some had been mended with thread that did not match.
She had made it for her own wedding night.
I had been told that once, at ten, and told never to repeat it.
"Mama would laugh," I said, out loud, to nobody.
"At us?" said Jubal.
"At the three of you. She'd say it took you long enough."
He laughed, flat on his back beside me, with his shirt gone and the leather band still buckled on his left wrist.
I did not think about it, because I was looking at the rest of him.
It was nine in the morning, and the Sunday sun came in around the blinds and laid stripes across his chest.
Tobe knelt behind me, naked, with his hands on my waist, and I could feel the heat of him against my back.
"Whatever I ask for," I said, "I get twice."
"That's the rule," said Tobe.
"Then I'm asking."
"Go on."
"I want you both. At the same time." The words came out steady, which surprised me. "I want to be so full I can't think."
Neither man moved.
Jubal's hand closed slowly into the quilt.
"Shy," he said slowly. "Say that again."
"I'm asking," I said.
"I only want to be sure I heard it."
"Jubal, I'm asking."
He let out a long unsteady breath.
"Twice," he said. "She did say twice."
"Don't you start," said Tobe, from behind me, but his voice was rough as gravel.
Jubal sat up and reached under the couch, and he came out with a bottle.
"Veterinary grade," he said, solemnly. "I'd never use it on a horse. Don't tell the other vets."
I laughed so hard I had to put my forehead down on his chest.
