Chapter 9: The Meadow
"Hold still," Jubal said, and turned it on.
The sound was a low hum in the dusk, and the last bull elk of the season was bugling across the meadow in answer.
I had bought it Friday in Harrison, in a store with no windows, and I had paid cash and not looked at the clerk.
Now I sat in the bed of Tobe's pickup on my mother's quilt, in my bare skin, with my back against Tobe's chest.
His arms were around me, and his thick legs were spread on either side of mine.
He was inside me, slow and deep, and he had not moved in a minute.
He was just holding there, buried, while Jubal knelt between our knees with the toy in his hand.
"Put it on me," I said.
Jubal laid the smooth head of it against my clit.
I made a sound I could not have named.
The hum went straight through me and into Tobe, and I felt him swear behind me without a word.
"Oh," Jubal said, delighted. "Oh, that's good. He felt that."
"I felt that," Tobe said, rough.
"Do it again."
Jubal circled slowly, then pressed harder, and I arched against Tobe's chest and gasped at the stars.
They were coming out one at a time over the Boxley ridge, small and hard and cold.
Out in the meadow, forty yards from us, a cow elk stood in the grass and watched without any interest.
"Tobe patrolled this side for eight years," Jubal said. "Nobody will come."
"They won't," Tobe said. "I wrote the roster."
"You are very efficient."
"Move," I said.
Tobe moved.
He rocked up into me from below with long unhurried strokes, and the toy buzzed against me, and I felt every nerve I had go bright.
His beard grazed my shoulder.
