Chapter 24: The Fund
Osric's cellar had forty casks of southern wine in it, just as I had said.
Under the third row, the eldest showed us a flagstone with a ring in it.
Under the flagstone were nine iron-bound chests.
I opened the first one with the key on Osric's own belt chain, and the lamp light ran gold over a heap of marks that would have bought a village.
"That's most of it," I said, and I heard my voice shake. "That's most of the fund."
Torin, behind me, said nothing at all.
He laid his hand on my shoulder, over the scar, and I leaned back into it.
We carried the chests out into the mill yard in the morning light, eight men to a chest, and I set a trestle table in front of the wheel-house step.
By noon there were three hundred people in the yard.
Every widow in Mirefold, every orphan, every old man who had ever been paid on paper.
They came from the lower meadow and the weir and the farm lanes, and from across the river, with their shawls and their sticks, and they stood in a line that went out through the gate and down the road.
I sat down at the table with a new book.
