Chapter 14: What She Never Asked

The doctor shook so hard that the tea spilled on my mother's table.

He sat in the kitchen chair with his coat buttoned wrong, a small grey man who had told Torin I was unfit to bear a child and had never once laid eyes on me.

The oldest warden had gone to "ask the Council" and had not come back.

Hugh stood by the stove with his arms crossed.

Torin stood in the doorway, because I had not told him he could sit.

"Edmund's men took my clinic keys this afternoon," the doctor said. "They emptied my files. My wife's at her sister's. I went to the pack gate and the guards shut it in my face."

"Why come to me?" I said.

"Because you are the only person who can hurt him back."

I set the kettle down.

"I'll say it all," he said. "He gave me the wording. He gave me the check. Cecily Cartwright came to my office with the date written on a card and told me to say I had examined you that day. I'll say it to the Council."

"Then say it," Hugh said.

"They won't let me. A doctor who has taken money is a liar to them. They'll say I was frightened, or bought twice, and Edmund will say it's the grief of a man who lost his license."

He wiped his face on his sleeve.

"There's an old law. My grandfather was a clerk for the Council. A white wolf may call the Council to sit on a wrong done to her, and the elders must sit, and hear every witness she names. Nothing else makes them hear one."

I looked at Torin. He looked at the floor.

"So I call them," I said.

"Not as Isla Garrow," the doctor said. "They'll say there's no white wolf and no law. You have to stand in front of them in your coat."

The kitchen was very quiet.

Two hundred wolves had called me the Luna with no wolf for two years.

I had liked it better when nobody knew what was under my skin.

"You don't have to," Torin said. His voice was low and scraped. "Isla. I can hold the seat another way. We'll find another way."
