Chapter 15: On His Knees on Live Television
Cassandra's POV
I was standing in the security office on the ground floor when Joan turned up the sound.
Every wall screen showed the same picture.
Corbin sat in a wheelchair on the steps of the Stonehaven Tower, with a bandaged leg and a gray face, in front of a hundred cameras.
The crawl at the bottom of the screen said it was live in forty countries.
"He's actually doing it," Joan said.
"Doing what?"
"Whatever this is."
Corbin looked into the lens.
"My name is Corbin Stroud," he said. "Until this morning I was the Alpha of the Stonehaven Pack."
A murmur ran through the reporters.
"I am not the Alpha," he said. "I never was."
I stopped breathing.
"The power I carried belongs to the woman who gave me this ring. Her name is Cassandra Greaves. She is the late Alpha's daughter, the heir of this pack and my mate in everything but a signature."
He held up his hand, and the pale band of skin on his finger shone under the lights.
"Four years ago, in the mountains, my wolf went wild. I should have died. Someone held me for three nights and fed me her own blood."
He swallowed.
"It was not who I thanked. I thanked the wrong woman for four years, in front of the woman who did it. I let her carry that, and I took the credit of being saved."
The reporters had gone silent.
In the security office, none of the guards moved either.
"I ignored her," Corbin said. "I forgot her birthday. I never asked what the fang pendant around her neck meant. I let the person I loved most bleed alone in an ambush while I answered a text."
