Chapter 16: Camille Before the Council

Camille sat on the steel bench in the holding room with her pink brooch pinned crooked.

Her white coat was torn at the shoulder, and she had lost one shoe.

She still smiled when I came in.

"Cassandra," she said. "You look tired. Is it the crown?"

I stayed by the door.

"You asked for me," I said. "Say it."

"Dale left me." Her voice trembled. "You saw him. He walked out and didn't look back."

"You sold him my route."

"For him. All of it was for him." She leaned forward. "Help me, and I'll give you everything. His men, his money, the safe houses. I know where every wolf of his sleeps."

"You can give that to the council."

"The council will kill me."

"Probably," I said.

The smile came back, thin and cruel.

"Then I'll tell them the thing you haven't told anyone," she said. "I'll tell them your husband knew it was you."

My hand stayed steady on the door.

"Say it to the council," I said. "Say it in front of everyone."

I left her sitting there with her mouth open.

The council chamber on the second floor held three hundred wolves.

They filled the benches, the aisles and the gallery, and they went silent when I walked in.

Six Elders sat on the dais.

The oldest one nodded to me, and she pointed to the high chair at the center of the dais.

"No," I said. "I'll stand."

I stood at the front, and Vaughn brought Camille in through the side door with her wrists in iron cuffs.

The wolves hissed.

A man in the third row spat on the floor.

The oldest Elder lifted her hand, and the room hushed.

"Camille Dray," she said. "You are charged with sending the pack's serum route to Redmaw, with bringing the enemy to our door, and with taking a debt that was never yours. How do you answer?"
