Chapter 17: The Floor Mats

I rode out to the border in the same black car as Camille.

Vaughn drove, and a second car of guards followed behind with its lights off.

They had put her on the floor of the back seat with her cuffed wrists locked to a ring in the door.

She lay across the rubber mats in her torn white coat, and I sat above her on the leather with my boots by her face.

"You wanted to know what he heard," she said.

"Tell me."

"Why should I?"

"Because the border is an hour away," I said. "And after that you're nothing to anyone."

Camille laughed at the floor.

"I came to the Rockies a day late," she said. "Dale had sent me to scout the Stonehaven camp, and I found the Alpha unconscious in a tent, with an empty vial beside him."

"You took it."

"I took it before anyone woke up. I thought it was only medicine." Her mouth twisted. "He opened his eyes while I was holding it, and I let him think it was mine."

"I know that part."

"Here's the part you don't know." She turned her head to look at me. "Two days later, he said, so quietly I almost missed it, 'I thought I heard someone else.'"

My stomach turned over.

"I said it must have been a dream," Camille said. "And he said, 'Yes. It must have been.' He never asked me again."

The car hummed on through the dark.

"He knew," she said. "Not the name, not the face. But he knew the voice that held his wolf wasn't mine. And he decided he didn't want to find out, because then he'd have to owe it to a woman he didn't want."

I looked out of the window.
