Chapter 24: Home

They came all night, and by dawn the road to the Hill of Black Stone was full of people.

They were thralls with raw wrists and wolves without packs.

Some carried babies, and some carried nothing.

Every one of them had seen a white fire stand over the North.

I stood at the gate in my plain dress with the circlet on my head and Evander at my side.

He was in an apron.

The old woman had given it to him an hour earlier, along with a ladle, and told him that anyone who wanted to stand next to the Queen could feed her people first.

He had not argued.

"Stir," said the old woman. "Don't burn it. A Kray who burns porridge will be thrown in the lake."

"I'm stirring," Evander said.

"You're glaring at it."

"I'm stirring with intent."

The boy with the knife laughed so hard that he had to sit down.

I bit the inside of my cheek and lost.

The first of the thralls came through the gate at sunrise, a woman with a child on her hip.

She stopped in front of me and did not seem to know what to do with her hands.

"Is it true?" she said. "That there's a place with no iron?"

"There's a hall," I said. "Come and see it."

She went in, and the next one followed.

At noon my mother stood on the keep step with her sleeves rolled, handing out bread, and she was laughing at something the Eastern King had said.

He had a bucket in each hand.
