Chapter 14: Twelve Hundred Dollars
Saskia's arms dropped from around me.
"The Bursar's office?" she said lightly. "Dean, that's private student information."
"It is," the Dean said. "Ms. DeCourcy signed a release for her conduct case this morning, when I told her the case was opening."
Kelsey flinched.
She was standing in the aisle with her arms wrapped around herself, and nobody had gone near her.
Saskia's eyes moved to her and then away.
"Ms. DeCourcy owed four thousand eight hundred dollars in housing fees," the Dean said. "The hold on her diploma was lifted in four payments."
She turned the page so the front rows could see it.
"Twelve hundred dollars each. Each from the same checking account."
"That's wonderful," Saskia said. "Her family must have helped."
"Her mother is in the second row," the Dean said. "She paid nothing. She has been trying to borrow it for a year."
Kelsey's mother half rose from her seat, a thin woman in a raincoat, and sat down again.
"The account holder is M. Wozniak," the Dean said.
A sound rolled through the hall.
It was low, and it kept growing.
Saskia took one slow breath.
"Yes," she said. "That was me."
She said it plainly, with her chin up.
"I paid it," she said. "Kelsey told me what she owed. She was going to lose her degree. I had my grandmother's graduation money in savings, and I gave it to her. Is that a crime?"
"Of course not," Colson said, uncertain.
"It's kindness," Saskia said. "I didn't tell anyone because I didn't want credit."
She looked around, and many faces softened.
