Chapter 13: Honey, Tell Them
The ringtone was a soft chime, and it played through every speaker in the hall.
Saskia stood with her hand frozen inside her pocket.
Nobody coughed.
"Dean," she said. "May I?"
The Dean nodded once.
Saskia drew out her phone and turned it so the screen faced the room.
It said *Jessa Marlow* in white letters.
"That's Jessa," she said, and her smile came back. "Of course it's ringing. She's calling me."
A few people laughed, and it was an uneasy sound.
"That's my number," Saskia said. "I'm not hiding it. Kelsey has had it since September."
I ended the call.
The chime stopped, and the hall felt larger.
"Kelsey came to me in tears three months ago," Saskia said. "She told me about her diagnosis. She told me about her debt. She said she couldn't sleep, and she couldn't stop herself at night."
"That's a lie," Kelsey said.
"I told her to see a counselor. I told her to stay away from Jessa's desk. I texted her every night."
Her voice broke on the last word.
It was a very good break.
"I was trying to save her," she said. "I can't believe this is what I get."
"You wrote to me," Kelsey said. She stepped toward the stage. "You wrote, go for the thing she can't replace."
"Did I?" Saskia asked gently. "Where? Show everyone."
Kelsey pulled out her phone and tapped the screen.
I watched her thumb stop moving.
"It's gone," she whispered.
"Gone," Saskia said.
"You made me delete it every night. You said it was safer."
