Chapter 12: Ask Your Best Friend

Nobody in the hall said a word.

"Told by whom, Ms. DeCourcy?" the Dean asked.

Her voice was calm and very loud in the silence.

Kelsey stood in the aisle with her fists against her chest.

Her face was wet now, and this time the tears were real.

"I can't," she said.

"You just said you only did what you were told," the Dean said. "Who told you?"

"I can't!"

"Kels," Colson said hoarsely. "Say it."

Kelsey looked at him, and then she looked at me.

Her eyes were red and cornered, and she did not look sorry.

"Ask your best friend," she said.

Two hundred heads turned toward me.

I stood very still at the foot of the stage.

Then the heads turned a little farther, toward the woman in the cream dress.

Saskia held the microphone in both hands.

Her smile was still on her face, but it had stopped moving.

"Me?" she said.

It came out soft and amazed.

"Kelsey," she said. "Honey. What are you talking about?"

"You know what I'm talking about."

"I don't," Saskia said. She set the microphone in its stand and put a hand on her chest. "I'm Jessa's best friend. I've been with her at every single step of this."

"I know," Kelsey said.

"I held her when you broke her laptop."
