Chapter 29: September Second
The white-haired woman came up the aisle with her chin in the air.
The director in the green fleece vest came right behind her, carrying a briefcase.
The woman stopped in front of Gran's wheelchair.
"Hello, Bev."
"You've gotten old," Gran said.
"You threw a broom at me."
"I missed."
"You did not miss."
Somebody in the crowd laughed, and then a lot of people did.
The woman turned to the auctioneer's table.
"I chair the land conservancy's board," she said. "Our vote on this farm is tomorrow morning. But the chair can sign an option payment on an easement without a vote. I've been waiting ten years for this family to call."
She opened the director's briefcase and took out a check.
"Sixty-four thousand dollars," she said. "Payable to the noteholder. I signed it in the car."
She laid it on the table next to mine.
The lawyer from Chicago looked at the two checks.
Then he looked at the front row.
Luke's father stood up.
He didn't look at the checks, or at me, or at his son.
