Chapter 18: Hocking Hills

Whisper Ridge had a hot tub on the back deck, and it was snowing on it.

Jonas stood at the rail in a pair of black swim trunks with a beer in each hand and watched the flakes die on the surface of the water.

Steam came up off it in sheets.

Past the rail the hills ran down into the dark, with no lights in any direction.

There was no signal.

It was the day after Christmas, the first Christmas of our daughter's life, and we had spent it on our own kitchen floor in paper hats.

Hannelore had called off her Christmas Eve for the first time in forty years.

Annelise had taken the baby for three nights without being asked twice, and had arrived at my door with a bag, a dog bed, and a list of rules for me.

"Go," she had said. "I know how to burp a baby."

I stood on the deck in my robe and looked at my husband.

"You're staring," he said.

"I'm looking."

"What's the difference?"

"Staring is rude," I said. "Looking is a plan."

He grinned, wide, with the chipped tooth showing, and held out my beer.

I took it and drank half, and set it down on the rail.

Then I untied the robe and let it drop.
