Chapter 18: The Lobby
At a quarter to seven, Fern's bridge scorecard was lying on my kitchen table.
It was the one she kept in her purse, with twenty-two names and phone numbers in her careful school-secretary hand.
Bram had given it to me from the pocket of the coat she left at the Landing.
I made the first call at seven, and I told each person the same sentence.
Fern Crowe is on the locked floor at Pine Ridge, and her nephew moves her at nine.
Nobody asked a second question.
By eight thirty, the lobby of Pine Ridge looked like a church supper.
Twenty-two people sat in the chairs and stood along the walls, in good coats and sensible shoes.
Half of them were choir altos.
A retired judge in a tweed cap sat at the center with a briefcase on his knee.
A woman with a walker held a covered casserole.
The receptionist stared at us, and then picked up her phone.
Bram walked in at eight forty.
He wore the navy jacket from the toast, with a clean white shirt.
He came across the carpet at an easy pace, his hands out of his pockets and open, and every head turned to follow him.
