Twelve hundred seats is a lot of people.
I looked at them through a gap in the black curtain and felt my knees go soft.
The Armory had been a drill hall once, and the ceiling went up forever.
Every chair was full, and a hundred people stood along the walls.
Buyers, editors, photographers, and in the third row a girl in a green coat who had waited in line outside the open call.
Hettie sat at the center of the front row in her best cardigan, with her glasses on their chain.
She had refused every other seat.
"Roxie," Tobias said behind me. "Thirty seconds."
He had a pin cushion on his wrist and a stain of something blue on his cheek.
He had not slept in two days, and he looked like a boy at his own birthday.
"I made the back seams double," he said. "Triple, in the train. Nobody is touching this dress."
