Chapter 41: The Vote

By ten to seven on Sunday the cannery was so full that men stood on the stairs.

I stood at the head table in jeans and a grey sweater, with Cade on my left and Ginny on my right.

Ginny had put on her good black dress and had not said a word since noon.

Bree sat behind us with a thick envelope in her lap.

Outside, in the lot, a tall woman with a braid sat in a white sedan with the engine off.

I had called her at nine that morning.

She had said, "I'll come early and I'll stay in the car," and I had never been so grateful to anyone.

The gray-bearded man tapped the new mallet on the bar.

"Bylaw eleven," he said. "Ten names. Rory Donohue speaks first."

Rory had come.

He stood in the middle of the floor in his VP patch, shaved and combed.

He looked like a man who had slept and made a decision.

I did not know which one.

"Brothers," he said.

His voice was steady and warm, and it filled the room.

"I never wanted this. I came home five weeks ago from the dead, and I've watched the best man I know struggle to run a club with a wife he married by accident, a lease she can veto, and a brother he can't say no to."

A few men nodded.

"The president broke bylaw nine. He went to Reno with his vest on the bar. He signed our building over to a second name without a vote. He let a thief steal thirty-eight thousand from this club for half a year."

"That's not what the paper says," said a voice from the back.

"Then let him say what's true." Rory turned. "Cade. Tell them the paper's wrong."

Cade stood up.

He didn't speak yet.

He looked down at me, and I nodded.

He took his hand off the table and held it out, palm up, for the whole room to see.

"All of it's true," he said. "Every word. I'd have gone to Reno with the vest on the bar again. I'd have signed her name on the lease again. And the thief was in front of me for six months."
