Chapter 8: Not a Vow

Forty bikers went out through the clubhouse door in a line, with Cade in front and me two steps behind him.

The parking lot was lit by one yellow lamp.

Travis stood in the middle of it beside a phone on a tripod, with four men in plain jackets behind him.

The pickup's tailgate was down, and the chains lay in a heap on the bed.

"Smile for the camera," Travis said. "Everybody who's going to say they were scared of me, you're on tape. Come on, Cade. Hit me. You know you want to."

I understood then.

He wanted the president of the Black Harbor Riders on video throwing the first punch, so he could sell it.

Cade did not hit him.

He walked up to the tripod and looked straight into the lens.

"Keep it running," he said. "Get all of it. Get every one of us."

Behind him the club had spread out across the lot in a half circle, forty men with their arms at their sides.

Nobody said a word.

The four men in the plain jackets looked at the half circle, then at each other.

One of them took a step back.

Then all four of them walked to the pickup and climbed in, and the one in the driver's seat did not wait for Travis.

The truck pulled out and its taillights went around the corner.

Travis stood alone beside his tripod.

"You're a coward," he told Cade.

"I'm the man who has forty witnesses and a camera," Cade said. "Pick up your phone and go home."

Travis snatched the tripod off the ground.

Then he turned to me, and his grin came back.

"Hey, Willa," he said. "Ask him about Reno."

Cade went completely still.

I had been to Reno once, four years ago, for a friend's bachelorette weekend.

I remembered a hotel bathroom and a taxi, and I remembered nothing at all about the last night.

"What about it?" I said.

"Ask him." Travis laughed and walked to his car. "Ask him why he's got that paper."
