Chapter 7: The Pantry

The pantry was narrow and dark, with one bulb on a string and a smell of onions and brown sugar.

I let go of his vest and found I couldn't think of anything to say.

Cade stood very still with his back against the shelves.

A can of tomatoes was digging into his shoulder, and he did not seem to feel it.

"Say it again," I said.

"Say what?"

"The part about your mouth."

His throat moved.

"Willa."

"You said it to forty people," I said. "Say it to me."

"I said I'd put my mouth on every inch of you until you forgot his name."

"And you meant it."

"Every word."

"You also said nothing happens until I say so."

"I did."

"Then I'm saying so."

He didn't move.

I could hear the roar of the room on the other side of the door, and the clank of Ginny's pans, and my own pulse.

"You don't have to," he said, roughly. "Not tonight. You're angry and you've had a bad week, and I made it worse. If you want this, it's got to be because you want it, not because you're mad at me."

"I am mad at you."

"I know."

"I'm furious," I said. "And I want you anyway. Both of those are true, and I don't have to pick one."

I stepped forward and put my hands on his chest.

His heart was going hard under my palms.

I rose up on my toes and kissed him.
