Chapter 6: Sunday Dinner

I went to the dinner because I would not let Travis's friends tell my story for me.

I wore jeans and my own boots and a grey sweater, and I did not wear the green dress.

The clubhouse smelled of pot roast and motor oil.

Long tables had been pushed together down the middle of the old cannery floor, and forty bikers sat along them with paper napkins tucked into their vests.

Ginny put me at the head of the nearest table, next to Cade.

The room went quiet when I sat down.

A gray-bearded man across from me set down his fork.

"So you're the wife," he said.

"I signed a paper," I said. "I'm still working on the rest of it."

A few of them laughed, not unkindly.

"Rumor says you did it for the garage," a younger man said from the end of the table. "Or for the house on the hill."

"I did it because I was angry," I said. "I didn't read what I signed, and I'm not going to pretend I did."

Nobody said anything.

The gray-bearded man looked at Cade, then at me.

"Honest," he said. "That's new."

"Eat," Ginny called from the kitchen door. "All of you. It's getting cold."

They ate.

It was loud and rough, and nobody tried to be gentle with me, which was a relief.

A man passed me the gravy without being asked.

I laughed at something Ginny said about a man's third motorcycle.

Under the table, Cade's knee sat a few inches from mine, and neither of us moved it.

I noticed that every time I looked up he was already looking somewhere else.

Halfway through the meal the front door opened, and the cold came in with Travis.
