Chapter 15: Her Desk
After the last bus, I locked the front office and the hall went quiet, and I did not go home.
My own office was at the end of the corridor, under the bell tower, with a green lamp and a view of the soccer field.
I sat at my desk with the dollar bill in front of me and listened to the building settle.
His boots came down the corridor at six.
I knew the sound the way I knew the radiator.
He stopped in the doorway with his mop bucket and a rag over his shoulder.
"You didn't come to supper," he said.
"I'm working."
"You're staring at a dollar."
"It's yours. It's Friday's."
"Today is Tuesday."
"I wanted to pay you early."
He set the bucket down in the hall and came in, and shut the door with his heel.
The lamp made a small gold room of the two of us.
"Mal," I said. "You asked me in the snow what I wanted. I never told you why I wanted you in the first place."
"I thought it was the name."
"It was the name for about a week."
I stood.
I went around the desk, and he stayed where he was.
